OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking

Introduction

The following tips on quitting smoking will help you with one of the hardest journeys you'll ever have to undertake in your life. When we quit smoking, the cravings become so unbearable, that the inevitable happens and most of us end up slipping back into the habit. Therefore, to limit the chances of failure from rearing its ugly head I've compiled this list of helpful hints and tips to help you on your quest to quit smoking.

How to Stop Smoking

Get focussed - One of the most important things you need to do before you quit smoking is get yourself in the right mindset because you'll have such a tough journey ahead of you. Make of list of all the benefits you'll yield from quitting, and how positively it'll affect your life. This list will not only help you to get motivated, but will also give you inspiration during the dark times.

Set a quit date - When you decide to quit smoking set a date to start the quitting process. The best date to aim for is a period that you envisage to be stress free and one where you have a busy schedule. Keeping busy will help keep your mind of the cravings and being in a relaxed atmosphere will limit the chance of you using cigarettes as stress release.

Abstain from alcohol - Smokers who also like to drink alcohol often say how much more difficult it is to stay focussed and keep away from the cigarettes when the beer or wine is flowing. If this sounds like you, why not combine the “giving up” with abstaining from alcohol. Doing so will help you achieve your overall goal. The abstinence doesn't have to be a permanent thing, just long enough for the nicotine cravings to become manageable.

Doctor's advice - When you decide to quit smoking go and speak to your doctor. Your doctor should have some good advice on how to go about quitting, plus you can talk over health worries you have over quitting such as weight gain, mood swings etc.

Quitting partner - If you have a friend or close relative who also smokes why not try and quit together? Having a partner who's going through the same thing will provide you a good support system and will help motivate you when times are hard.

Spread the word - Before you quit smoking tell family, friends, and work colleagues about your intentions. Not only will you find that you'll get buckets loads of encouragement it will empower you.; it'll will add to you inner strength and determination. Additionally it will – hopefully – stop them from offering you a cigarette every time they light up too.

Finally, when we tell people we are going to something, we then run the risk of losing face if we don't accomplish it. Therefore the fear of looking weak-willed can act has a huge motivational tool.

Healthy regime - This is one of the best tips on quitting smoking because a healthier lifestyle will lead to a healthier mindset. Not only will help keep your mind occupied, it has been scientifically proven that exercise helps ease stress and anxiety, the two main relapse triggers for people attempting to quit smoking.
