Thanksgiving Day 2009

OPH Good Housekeeping

Thanksgiving day 2009 - 26th November (USA)

Thanksgiving - Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November (26th November 2009) dates back to the year 1620. Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower set sail for the resourceful New World, finally settling in a place called Plymouth, Massachusetts.( Plymouth was named after its original settler Captain John Smith who arrived there 5 years earlier)

Historically Thanksgiving concerns the Native Americans who came to the pilgrims aid, teaching them how to crow crops and vegetables, resulting in a successful harvest in 1621 after a harsh winter. This gave cause for celebration, a celebration held annually thereafter, marked officially by Abraham Lincoln in 1863.

Thanksgiving is a day marked not only as as a gesture of thanks to God for his blessing but as a mark of respect towards the native Americans for their invaluable assistance in the production and successful harvesting of crops

Thanksgiving Day celebrates the harvest festival. It is a time for family reunions, feasting on traditional fayre such as carved turkey, pumpkin pie, corns and cranberry sauce and a time for exchanging gifts. Gifts are exchanged to show respect to family, friends and work collegues. Traditional gifts include Thanksgiving flowers, baked cookie hampers and candy wreaths
