OPH Good Housekeeping & HomemakingSnoring remedies have an increasingly significant role to play in this fast paced modern era, as sleep is now at a premium due to the global phenomenom of working longer and longer hours, year on year. That's why I've decided to use my years of experience and research skills to bring you an informative guide into home remedies for snoring, based around herbal, old fashioned and modern aproaches and remedies. I hope the following article will help you as much as possible. Right, let's get started on some of the best snoring remedies out there. But before we do, it may be useful to underdstand the circumstances behind why people snore in order to gain an insight into how the following methods can help. What are the causes of snoring Snoring is basically down to an irregular airflow due to some kind of blockage. This blockage is generally caused by four different factors or a combination of each. These are; a mis-positioning of the jaw which can cause quite a bit of muscle tension in the neck; weakness in the throat causing a slight restriction in the airways; some kind of obstruction in the nasal passages; or a build up of fat around the throat. Now that we have gotten a grasp of why we snore we can move onto the different remedies on how to solve the problem. Nasal Strips - Using nasal strips as a snoring remedy is quite a new phenomenon and was first used by athletes as an aid to open up their nasal passages during performances, thus enabling them to increase the air intake. It was at this point that Doctors started to suggest that long suffering partners of snorers gave them to their noisey other halfs to stop them from snoring. Although athletes don't use nasal strips as much as they did, when they first arrived on the market - perhaps because they aren't aesthetically easy on the eye - they are still sold in large numbers as snoring remedies, which would suggest that they are pretty effective as a treatment. Tennis Ball - At this point you are probably wondering why would taking up a racquet sport act as a snoring remedy. Don't worry you don't have to dust off your gym shoes. What you need to do is to carefuly cut the ball in half and sow it into the lining of your noisey partner's night shirt or pyjmas. The principle behind one of the strangest snoring remedies out there is because snorers tend to be at their noisey best when lying on their backs the tennis ball will stop them from rolling over, as it'll be too uncomfortable for them to do so. The only drawback to this tip is that you or your partner may not have the best night's sleep - the princess and pea tale springs to mind here. Baby's Dummy - Don't laugh, apparently studies in the U.S. have shown that this is pretty effective at treating snoring. This is down to the fact that snorers tend to force air through their nasal passages. Placing the dummy in the snorer's mouth will help counteract this tendancy. However, this method shouldn't really be used if the sufferer has any kind of breathing problems. Vapour Rub - Many snorers have suggested that vapour rub applied to the chest before they go to sleep reduces their pneumatic drill like snoring. Presumably because the aromas open up the airways and clear the sinuses, therefore avoiding those blockages which cause irregular airflow which we discussed earlier in the article. Sticky Tape - This is one of the strangest snoring remedies I've come across, but shopuld not be used if the snorer has any breathing problems whatsoever. The tip is to use sticky tape to stick the snorer's lips together; doing so will aid the regualtion of airflow and therefore cut down on the chances of any snoring episodes occuring. Chin Straps - Talking about unusual snoring remedies this is another tried and tested one and relates to the sticky tape tip. As more than 95% of snorers breath through their mouths when sleeping, the chin strap will ensure they'll have to breath through their nasal passages instead. Again, people with breathing dificulties should avoid using this stop snoring tip. Antihistamines - If you or your partner's snoring is so out of control that you're both having sleepless nights, why not see your doctor about prescribing antihistamines for the snorer? It is said that this type of medication helps snorers by opening up their airways, allowing a smooth controlled manner of breathig while sleeping. Voice Training - This sounds like a strange snoring remedy, but training the voice such as through singing can help tone the small muscles within the throat ensuring that they don't sag when your sleeping, which in turn can induce snoring. Ear Plugs - If the snoring is so bad and you've tried all the remedies under the sun and nothing seems to work, then the last resort could be to buy some ear plugs for you and your partner. Foam ones are pretty good because they mould to the shape of your ear cavity. However caution must be applied here, you need to make sure that your burgalar and more importantly your smoke alarms are still loud eneough to wake you when you're sleeping. I hope you found these snoring remedies useful.
