Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria in the mouth that produces sulphur compounds. Pungent foods such as those containing garlic or onion will also significantly contribute to bad breath too. Additionally the failiure to floss and brush your teeth on the regular basis, will lead to an accumulation of the bad breath causing bacteria.

The usual cause of bad breath is down to the breakdown of proteins by bacteria the following also contribute to bad breath too:

Smoking
Alcohol
Garlic
Onion
Cheese
Orange juice
Gum disease / Gingivitis
Tooth decay
Food accumulation between the teeth
Intenstinal worms
Colds and throat infections
Sleeping with mouth wide open
Irregular bowel movements

Mint leaves - One of the best ways to freshen up bad breath is to chew on mint leaves regularly, they are like the ying to an onions yang, they'll make your breath smell beautiful.

Parsely - As with mint leaves, chewing parsley is another good natura remedy for bad breath, although it only disguises the bad breath rather than curing it.

Cardomom seeds - Sticking with the chewing theme - where natural remedis for bad breath is concerned - cordomom seeds when chewed upon will give you breath a sweet smellng aroma.

Ginger - Like garlic and onion ginger is pungent, but unlike the former pieces of food, it smells nice. Lemon juice and water - A good short term natural remedy for bad breath is to squeeze lemon juice into a glass of water an gargle it. However, this should not be done to regularly as lemon juice is not to good for your teeth, as it tends to erode enamel over time.

Yogurt - Eating yogurt regularly is one of the best natural remedies for bead breath and what's more modern research has now backed this traditional view up. This is down to the fact that 'good' bacteria which is contained within the yougurt, will battle with the odor causing bacteria for supremecy. Findings by the Association for Dental Research suggests that oral bacteria can be reduced by uo to 80% iby eating plain live yogurt for a period of six weeks.

Brushing teeth after every meal - As I discussed earlier the failiure tio brush your teeth on a regular basis will encourage the sulphur producing bacteria to multiply. The best tme to brush them is after every meal, so breakfast, lunch and dinner. Brushing and flossing regularly will also reduce the chance of gum disease and tooth decay, which can also contribute tot bad breath.

Fenugreek - Fenugreek is one of the best natural remedies for halitosis or bad breath. What you need to do here is to make a tea, which should be consumed on a regular basis. Put one teaspoon of the seeds into 500ml of water, bring to the boil and let it simmer for 15 minutes before drinking it like a tea.

Avacado - Eating avacado on a regular basis can indirectly combat breath. This is down to the fact that avacoda reduces intestinal putrefaction, which is one of the main causes of bad breath.

Guava - The compounds which are contained within guva prove to be an excellent natural remedy for bad breath. Chewing it is very beneficial to the teeth and gums. It reduces bleeding of the gums and prevents bad breath.

Zinc ions - Zinc is really good at reducing the sulpher compounds that cause bad breath. Therefore making a mouthwash containing these ions, which can be purchased from any health food store, will vastlly reduce bad breath. Eating foods rich in zinc such as oysters, shellfish, wheat bran, wheat germ, pine nuts and pecan nuts will mkae your breath smell fresher.

Drink plenty of fluids - One of the main causes of bad breath is dehydration, therefore ensuring you keep your body topped up with fluids, will keep your mouth moist and free(ish) from bad breath.
