Lawn Tips - All the hints and tips you need to create your perfect garden
OPH Good Housekeeping - Lawn Tips
If you are planning to lay down a new lawn the best time to do it is in late summer. In order to prepare the ground for turf laying, firstly, you need to kill the weeds (see flowerbed tips), and secondly, dig up the designated area and turn the soil over, using a rake to flatten the area out. Ideally these procedures need to be carried out a couple of times
If this is done properly then by the end of September or early October the ground should be perfect for seeding or laying the new turf.
Looking after your lawn properly is very important in scheme of things, as neglecting it short-term will cause long term harm. If there is a drought then undoubtedly your lawn will suffer, at this point it may be a good idea to put some more seeds down, but only when the draught looks like coming to a definite end.
To make sure your lawn remains or eventually becomes lovely, lush and green then you’ll have to use lawn fertilizer, preferably in the Autumn time, this will ensure better results come the following summer.
A great lawn tip for making your lawn look spectacular and stand out, is to plant miniature daffodils and perhaps crocuses in and around it.
In order to do this you need to get a trowel or small spade and use it to lift a piece of turf, get a handful of bulbs and scatter them on the bare soil, finally, pop the piece of turf over them and come spring time you’ll have a lovely carpet of colour. If you wish to plant larger bulbs then these may be planted by using a bulb planter.
NB. As daffodils spring up aptly in early spring then you’ll have to plant the bulbs in autumn.
When the winter has passed you’ll want to mow your lawn. However, before you do so, make sure the last frost has passed, because if you don’t it could damage your lawn in the long run. When you are sure the last frost has passed then make sure you don’t cut it too short as this too can damage the lawn long-term, just give it a quick trim.
