How To Whiten Teeth

OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking

Introduction

How to whiten teeth is in everyones' minds especially in a world where the pressure is on to look good. Coffee, cola, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and aging can all stain and discolour teeth. These treatments or remedies to produce whiter teeth are dependent on the severity of the yellowing, therefore the following solutions are geared towards varying levels of tooth discolouration.

Top 10 Teeth Whitening Tips

Baking Soda - Brushing your teeth with a paste made from baking soda and water will help you remove stains and whiten teeth. You should aim to do this about once a week for best results.

Banana Peel - This tip on how to whiten teeth is simple but very effective. What you need to do here is grab yourself a piece of banana skin and use it to clean your teeth in a circular motion. Do this everyday and within two weeks you should see a clear improvement in the colour of your teeth.

Bar of Soap - Although this teeth whitening remedy sounds a bit gruesome and might not taste too good, it actually does its intended job well. If you brush your teeth regularly with an unscented soap then not only will this make your pearly whites sparkle, but it will remove even more plaque and tartar than your ordinary toothpaste.

Bay Leaves - Dry or powdered bay leaves mixed with orange peel is a good weapon when you're trying to figure out how to whiten teeth. Just rub this mixture on your teeth and rinse.

Healthier Diet - Eating more fruit and vegetables and cutting out fast and processed foods will give you whiter teeth with far less cavities.

Orange Peel - Using orange peel to whiten teeth works pretty much on the same lines as the aforementioned banana peel. Therefore, just rub the peel over your teeth in a circular motion for shiny white teeth.

Sage - Rubbing sage leaves on your teeth will clean your teeth, remove stains and make your breath smell nice. However be careful not to get too much of it on your lips, as it has a tendency to turn your lips red.

Spinach - Eating raw spinach - although may not be appealing to most people - will help remove stains from your teeth, which helps in your efforts to whiten your teeth.

Strawberries - As far as tips go on how to whiten teeth this tip involving strawberries is probably the most appealing. what you need to do here is mash the strawberries up to form a paste, rub on your teeth, leave for 5 minutes (if you can resist not eating the paste) and finally rinse away.

Water - Drinking water regularly, especially after meals will definitely help you in the tooth whitening process. Doing so will help you rinse your mouth out and remove some of the stains, which food leaves behind.

How to whiten teeth - Preventing tooth discolouring

Beer and fizzy sugary drinks - Beer and most fizzy drinks contain plenty of sugar which will vastly increase your chances of getting cavities. Fizzy drinks such as cola will also stain your teeth, therefore for whiter teeth try to cut down your consumption of these drinks.

Coffee - Drinking coffee and tea on a regular basis will definitely discolour your teeth, so try to cut down. If you don't want to cut down drink water in between sips to help wash away residual coffee or tea.

Dentist - Visit your dentist at least twice a year to remedy problems before they get out of hand. In addition a good dentist will also give your teeth a proper cleaning when you visit.

Mouthwash - Believe it or not, some mouthwashes will not help you in your efforts on how to whiten teeth. Not only do they contain alcohol, they have been known to stain your teeth too.

Red Wine - Not only does red wine contain loads of sugar and alcohol, it is probably the biggest culprit in staining your teeth. If you don't want to stop drinking wine, why not rinse your mouth out with water after a glass of wine? Or preferably drink the water, this will not only remove the residual wine, but it will reduce dehydration. Alternatively you can drink rose or white wine.

Smoking - As we all know nicotine contains tar and plenty of other chemicals that severely stain your teeth. Therefore one of the best teeth whitening tips I can offer you - if your a smoker - is to cut down or preferably quit altogether, because you will always have a battle on your hands to prevent tooth discolouring.

Sugary Food - This piece of teeth whitening advice is a given. The greater amount of sugary food you consume the bigger risk you have of your teeth decaying, so cut down to make life easier.
