OPH Good Housekeeping & HomemakingBelow is a list of the top 10 home security products on the market according to OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking. I hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I enjoyed reporting on it.If you have a difference of opinion on the the list I have compiled, why not come up with your own definitve top 10 via the form below? Your imput will be invaluable. Two-Way Intercom - Two-way intercoms are great for those people - especially the vulnerable - living, say, on their own, who are worried about people they don't know calling at the house. These will allow the person in the house to chat to the visitor before the door is opened. They also have the added advantage in that the home owner can tell any unwanted salesman or the like to buzz-off without having to go through the rigmarole of opening the door to them.In addition to hearing what the caller has to say for themselves, some are fitted with a small camera so that the inhabitant can view who they are talking too and check any I.D. if neccessary. Guard Dog - Although not neccessarily noted as being a home security product in the true definition of things, a guard dog is a huge deterrent to a would be burglar and a great all round way to keep your family safe. Some people would probably say that buying a dog is a bit extreme - in terms of vets fees, food and "walkies" - and might not be a big enough detterent for the more determined variety of intruder, however in most cases a burglar is just lookin for an easy target and will swerve a home if the owners have a dog. O the other hand if you don't want to go to the extent of buying a dog then you could always buy a motion alarm, which when triggered will give out a sound of a barking dog, however this won't work if the burglar has been "casing the joint" for a few days, as he would have worked out that you don't actually have a canine friend. Smokecloak - The smokecloak is a strange little home security product, which deserves it place in our top 10.The premise behind this handy gadget is; what cannot be seen cannot be stolen. Why? Because the machine has motion sensor on it and when triggered will rapidly fill the room with a fog like cloud, rendering it impossible for the burglar to see what they're supposed to be stealing. In addition worry not, the smoke which is produced will not ruin the decor of your home and is not harmful if inhaled. Just think of it as being similar to a dry ice machine (although a lot more powerful and rapid) found at the local discotheque. In addition, the initial shock of being surrounded by smoke should be enough for the intruder to make a rapid exit. As this home security product is only of use when the intruder has reached his initial goal of gaining access to your premesis it is not featured higher on our top 10 list. Anti-arson Letterbox - This home security product is obviously not put in place to protect against intruders but it will keep yourself and other household members safe from pranksters who somehow think it's "cool" to put fireworks and other flammable products through peoples letterboxes. This iron or steel box is fitted in the same way as a general letterbox, but is equiped with a fire extinguisher and a sensor. When the box reaches a temperature of 50 degrees C the sensor will kick in and set off the extinguisher, thus removing the potential danger. This is a great little gadget which will put your mind at ease during firework season which seems to last from September until January nowadays. Security Cameras - Visible security cameras can be a huge deterrent to would be intruders, because let's face it, who'd want be caught breaking the law on camera? However, a determined burglar would find ways to take camera's out of play, that's why this home security product only makes it to number six on our list. However the plus point is that your TV can be hooked up to the cameras. Therefore if you hear any foreign sounds you can switch channels and see what is going on in seconds. Restricted Keys - Originally these handy little home security products were basically your average front or back door key - produced in limited numbers - which had or still have a special patent attached to them, the consequence of this is that a locksmith would be breaking the law if he ever duplicated the key without authorisation.More recently these keys are still produced and distributed in limited numbers, with some still having special patents attached to them; but in order to make them nigh-on impossible to duplicate some are fitted with computer chips, magnets or are just made using different types of metals. Basically, if you lose your house keys you won't be running the risk of someone duplicating them and the same can be said if they're stolen too. In addition and arguably more importantly, because the locks on perimeter doors - which are serviced by these keys - have to be specially made, they won't be in danger of suffering from a phenomenon known as lock bumping; which is where the potential intruder uses a type of specialist "skeleton key" which will work for locks of a certain type. Therefore adding to your household security. Mortice Locks - These home security products give extra protection to doors and windows. How they work is that a mortice is cut out of the door or other piece of furnitue and the lock is fitted into the gap. For added protection these locks may be fitted into the bottom and top of the door.In addition mortice locks are a prefered source of household security when compared to the cylindrical variety because of their added strength and versatility. Therefore all in all if an intruder tries to froce the external doors or windows open - when fitted with mortice locks - he should have no joy, not unless any of the door panels are damaged or have been extremely weakened in any way. Lighting - Although a very simple home security product, decent lighting is an excellent detterent to a burglar as they won't have darkness on their side when they approach your house. Therefore as intruders of this type are usually opportunists, the liklihood is, they'll walk past your home and find an easier target. On other side these types of detterent become obsolete during daylight hours and plus because they've been around for years and lights operated by movement sensors can be triggered by cats, dogs and other animals a lot of the time they got ignored, especially at the dead of night when people are sleeping. For these reasons lighting as a form of home security measure means that it doesn't feature higher on our list. Iron Grills or Bars - Iron Grils or Bars can be fitted to windows and doors which are vulnerable to attack. However it's important that you don't fit them to escape routs in case of a fire. When used correctly there is no chance that an intruder will be able to infiltrate your premesis. The only real downside to them is that they don't look aesthetically pleasing on the eye, however many D.I.Y. department stores do sell decorative bars and grills. In a way these are only preferable in extreme circumstances that's why they don't feature higher on our top 10 security products list. Alarms - After many hours of debating home security products, here at OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking HQ it was decided - although quite possibly the easy choice - that the good old alarm is the best way of protecting your home from un-wanted visitors.Quite often if a burglar can see that you've got an alram system installed they won't even bother coming near your house and will just find a much easier target. Therefore not only will they alert police and home owners that there is an intruder present alarms also act as a visible deterrent too. Some alarm systems include magnetic sensors which are fitted on windows and doors, therefore if someone tries to force them they'll set the alarm off. The only downsides are that they can be set off accidently and poorly fitted ones can cause more hassle than they're worth. All in all there versatality and effectiveness at being a burglary deterrent means they've come top of our home security products lists.
