Home Remedies For Constipaton

OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking

Our home remides for constipation will not only help you ease your condition and enable you to become "regular" once more but they will give you an insight into what causes this embarassing affliction and what techniques you can undertake to limit the chances of it returning.

All in all these natural remedies for constipation will provide you with all the tools you'll need in order to combat this condition.

Well, without further "a-do" lets hit the floor running - No pun intended.

What are the symptoms of constipation

The most recognisable symptoms of constipation are irregularity and difficulty in passing stools. In addition to these, less conspicuous signs may also be prevalent such as loss of appetitie, bad breath, coated tongue, dark circles under your eyes, abdomenal pain, lower back pain, sluggishness, apathy, heartburn and headaches.

Although the latter symptoms may be brought on at any time, by any number of non-related conditions, if they coexist with the more "recognisable" symptoms then the liklihood is, is that you are constipated. However, to totally make sure that this is indeed the case medical advice should be sought.

What causes constipation?

The truth behind the matter is that many things can induce this affliction, but in order to treat and prevent this condition and therefore enbale the home remdies for constipation to work their magic, we have to - of course - understand the lifestyle choices behind the problem at hand.

Uusally the biggest contributor to the onset of constipation is diet and the lifestyles we lead. For example, studies have shown that a relatively high proportion of sufferers consume food and drink which are lacking in essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally they fail to intake sufficient levels of water too, which if you think about it, considering the human body is made up of roughly 70% water it's hardly surprising that dehydration can play an integral role in the condition.

Other dietry choices also have an impact too, such as eating excessive amounts of red meat - which as we know - takes far longer to travel through the digestive system than most other foods; drinking too much tea, coffee and alcohol - due to their dehydration capabilities; and failiure to chew food properly, as, again, degestion of food - in this case - will take longer than it really should.

Finally, the non-dietry aspects of the condition, which may play a part in reducing the effects of our home remedies for constipation include lack of physical exercise, depression and allround emotional duress.

What are the best natural home remedies for constipation?

Bael Fruit - In truth quite a few fruits contain properties which will aid the treatment of constipaton. But the king of these is the bael fruit, this fruit grows on the Indian Subcontinent and very much similar to the coconut and has been used for years in Asia as a pretty potent laxative.

For constipation treatment purposes between 50-75g should be consumed daily, however for the most effective results ensure that you eat it in its original form for a period of 8 weeks or so. Doing so should increase functionability of your intestines and digestive system as a whole.

Figs - Figs are another fruit known for effictively treating constipation. They contain superb laxative properties and should be eaten first thing in the morning to benefit to the max. Therefore, what you need to do is to soak roughly five dry figs in a small amount of water overnight and consume them when you awake.

Grapes - Grapes are one of the best natural home remedies for constipation due to the combination of sugars, acids and cellulose which are contained in these little gems. However, their benefits go further than just solving the problem of constipation they also benefit the whole digestive system. On the other hand, the drawback of eating grapes as natural remedies for constipation is that you need to eat quite a lot of them to obtain the optimum results, upto 400g worth daily to be precise, so if you have the stomach for them, then go for it.

Guava - As you may or may not know guavas are tropical fruits native to the Americas and are roughly the same size as an apple. They are usually eaten to reduce the effects of constipation because they contain high levels of fiber and therefore roughage, which means they'll just help you clear your bowels as nature intended. To obtain the desired results then one or two guavas should be eaten daily.

Oranges - At this point you may now see a theme developing in the natural treatment of constipation. Yeah, that's right. Sugary fruits are extremely good at clearing the bowels, as those of you who own dogs who have dined on the contents of your fruit bowls can probably vouch for.

Where do oranges fit in when treating constipation? Well, basically they contain properties which help stimulate the bowels and reduce the build up of digested food in the colon. For the most effective results you should eat about four oranges a day - two first thing in the morning and the last two before retiring to your bed.

Papaya Papayas are a large amber coloured fruit native to the Americas and when ripe are soft to the touch and are generally used as a foil for constipation because of the natuarl laxative properties they contain. As they are pretty large then eating half a papaya per day for breakfast should yield the desired results.

Pears Pears are one of the best traditional fruits for treating constipation and as little as one of them consumed daily - eaten after breakfast can be enough to combat moderate cases of constipation.

Raisins Raisens contain massive amounts of the natural sugar fructose, which is why they are considered to be an excellent laxative and therefore a very good home remedy for constipation. For the best results tests show that soaking them in water- which will enable them to grow to their original size - and consuming them for breakfast along with the water they were soaked in should do the trick.

Spinach Spinach is on the list of natural home remedies for constipation because of all vegetables it's the one which benefits the digestive system the most and is packed fill of fiber too. For brilliant results then a 250ml glass of half spinach juice and half water consumed first thing in the morning and last thing at night for just a couple of days should work wonders.

What steps can I take to avoid constipation?

The main things you can do in order to avoid constipation is to eat the right foods and eat them properly and generally choose the right lifestyle options.

Diet is extremely importnat if you're rather prone to developing this ailment, ensure you eat pleanty of fiber such as bran, wholegrain cereals, green vegetables, dried fruits etc.

In terms of eating food properly to avoid constipation I'm talking about ensuring that you chew food correctly and stay clear of eating foods late at night. In addition you should also stay clear of refined foods such as white flour products, cheese, cakes, biscuits, bread, rice, white sugar, boiled egss, and pulses.

The final lifestyle option you can adopt in the treatment of constipation or to avoid it is to embark on a healthy living campaign try and get more exercise. Take your dog for extra long walks, swim, join a sports team, basically just get those lungs working. All this will improve muscle strength, thus limiting the chances of you falling victim of constipation.
