Heavy Curtains Cleaning Tips

OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking - Heavy Curtains Cleaning Tips
Heavy curtains as a general rule should be dry cleaned periodically. This not only expensive but also time consuming; To clean and refresh your heavy curtains at regular intervals or for special occasions follow this simple guide.
Vacuum Clean
Equipment :
Vacuum cleaner with extension house and accessories:
Crevice Tool (elongated cylindrical attachment with flattened end)
Upholstery Tool (flattened triangular shape)
Rounded Brush
Draw the curtains to maximise surface area.
Work from top to bottom starting with pelmets and scarves.
Use the extension hose (remember to open the vent to reduce suction and to prevent excessive drag)
Attach the crevice tool to vacuum the pelmet ledge. You may need to use step ladders unless you have an angled crevice tool.
Vacuum the folds at the tops of the curtains and on any scarves.
Replace accessory with the upholstery tool and working from left to right vaccum gently down the curtains.
For embroidered fabrics use the round brush instead of the upholstery tool to prevent damage.
Freshen Up
For a quick fix simply spray lightly with a fabric refreshener from a distance of about 12”.This may be all that is needed. (remember to test for colour fastness)
For a more detailed clean remove scarf and curtains and place one rolled (to reduce creasing) item at a time in the tumble dryer. For extra freshness add a piece of white cotton which should be damp and clean.
To reduce static which attracts dust and mites add a fabric softener sheet to the dryer.
Remember to set dryer to a low temperature and check frequently
Re-hang curtains as soon as possible after tumble drying
