Hangover Cures - How to cure & prevent a hangover

OPH Good Housekeeping & HomemakingWhat are the best hangover cures? There is nothing worse than waking up “the morning after” with a dry mouth, stomach cramps, headache and dry eyes. So here are ten remedies which may help ease your symptoms. Hair of the dog
This hangover cure, although not curing your hangover just delaying it “the hair of the dog” can help delay the body’s process of de-toxing after a night of drinking, resulting in the symptoms of the hangover being delayed. The science of this remedy lies in the fact after a night of drinking the liver starts to break down the ethanol and methanol which is contained in all alcoholic drinks. As the liver will break down the ethanol first and the process of breaking down the methanol is what causes the symptoms. The drinking of the alcohol in the “hair of the dog” means the liver will stop breaking down the methanol and start breaking down ethanol again, thus delaying the hangover. Rehydrate yourself
A lot of the symptoms caused by a hangover, such as having a dry mouth and generally feeling nauseas are caused by your body being dehydrated. Therefore after a night of drinking, and preferably before you go to bed drink plenty of water this should help rehydrate your system and lessen the symptoms you are likely to receive in the morning. The science of the matter is when you drink alcohol not only will the alcohol you have consumed pass straight into your bladder, on its way it’ll take water with it, making you dehydrated. The scientists say that when 50ml of alcohol is consumed it must be replaced by roughly 350ml of water. Have a big fry-up
For this hangover cure some people recommend that a good old fashioned fry-up works wonders after a night out, as proteins found in the meat and eggs are a good source of amino acid. Secondly eating a good breakfast in the morning helps kick start your metabolism which in turn speeds up the process of alcohol breakdown and absorption. Get some exercise
Getting some exercise doesn’t necessarily mean going down to the gym, it can be as simple as walking to the shop or walking your dog. This remedy is down to the fact that if you intake excess oxygen by exercising then this helps increase your metabolism and helps speed up the breakdown and absorption of the alcohol. Take multi-vitamins
When you consume alcohol it strips the body of vitamins A, B, and C. Therefore taking vitamin supplements can help ease your hangover symptoms. Eat bananas
As bananas are high in fructose and especially potassium which the body loses quite a lot of when alcohol is consumed they provide an excellent remedy to the old hangover. The magnesium they also contain will help sooth those pounding headaches. If you don’t fancy eating the bananas you could always make a banana smoothie using a blender.Hangover CureIngredients 1/2 cup milk1 banana1/4 cup plain or fruit yogurt1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream or yogurtBlend until smooth, pour into a chilled glass and serve. Tomato juice
Tomatoes are full of antioxidants so are very good in helping the absorption rate of alcohol. On the morning after the night before if you pour yourself a couple of glasses of tomato juice this can help reduce the duration of your hangover. Other foods high in antioxidants include: Berries,Broccoli, Carrots,Garlic,Onions,Red grapes,Soy,Spinach,Tea,Whole grains, Break up your drinks
When you are out and you are expecting to drink quite a lot, perhaps at the office Christmas party, a good idea could be for you to break up your consumption of alcohol by drinking a soft drink in between each alcoholic drink. Not only will this cut down the amount you drink, making your hangover in the morning less severe, it will also make you less dehydrated. Don’t mix your drinksWhen you are on a night out try not to mix your drinks, as the chemicals found in opposing drinks may interact with each other, making your hangover more severe.
