Halloween Decorations

OPH Good Housekeeping & Homemaking

Below are some of my favourite Halloween decorations. They are probably my favourite for the very reason, they are quick and relatively simple to make. Why not check them out and see for yourself.

  • 1.Classic pumpkin mask
  • 2. Glitter moon ‘n’ stars
  • 3. Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin
  • 4.Shrunken heads
  • 5. Hanging bat
  • The classic pumpkin lantern mask

    What you need

  • Orange paper plate
  • 2 pieces of green string or elastic
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Instructions

  • On the back of the paper plate draw a face, you know the round eyes, triangular nose and the squiggly mouth most pumpkins have?

  • Carefully, using the scissors cut out the eyes, nose and mouth you have drawn.

  • With either the scissors or a screwdriver pierce two holes, one on either side of the paper plate.

  • When you have followed the above step, get the pieces of string or elastic and thread them through the two holes. Tie a knot in the ends of each one. Hey presto you have your Halloween decoration.
  • Glitter moon ‘n’ stars

    What you need

  • Sheets of black card
  • Glue stick
  • Gold and/or silver glitter
  • White pencil or chalk
  • Scissors
  • Instructions

  • Draw stars and moon on the black card using the chalk or white pencil (these are best to use as darker colours will not show up very well, making life difficult when applying the glue)

  • Staying within the outline of the shapes use the stick of glue, to make sticky the surface area of the moon and stars.

  • Before the glue dries sprinkle the glitter over the shapes in a liberal fashion, ensuring that no part of that shape can be seen.

  • After a couple of minutes, allowing enough time for the glue to dry, turn the card upside down and give it a shake. NB Make sure you collect any glitter which falls from the sheet as it is turned upside down, as this can be used again on the next Halloween decoration.

  • When you turn the card back around you’ll have your moon or star in all its glory. Cut out the shape and hey presto you have your decoration.
  • Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin

    What you need

  • Short very sharp knife
  • Large spoon
  • Candle
  • Tea spoon
  • Instructions

  • In the top of the pumpkin, using the knife cut out a largish circle. This pumpkin to will act as a lid so don’t throw it away.

  • Using the spoon scoop out the contents of the pumpkin (i.e. seeds and flesh)NBIf you don’t want to waste the contents of the pumpkin, why not check out our pumpkin pie recipe?

  • When the above step has been accomplished draw the face on the pumpkin – the scarier the better. And by using the sharp knife cut out the sketched facial features of your creation.

  • Use the smaller tea spoon to remove the rest of the inside of the pumpkin.

  • In the bottom of the pumpkin cut out a hollow so you’re candle can fit into the bottom of it without falling over. Hey presto you have your scary Halloween decoration.
  • Shrunken heads

    What you need

  • Large cooking apples
  • Cloves
  • Dry rice
  • Small sharp knife
  • Instructions

  • Peel the skin from the apples, and carve out a face with big features.

  • Rub the apples with the lemon juice and salt, as this will stop them from turning brown.

  • Using the cloves, place them in the eye sockets as eyes and use the dry grains of rice to put in the carved out mouth for teeth.

  • Place the apples in a dry and warm place and leave for 10 – 14 days. Keep going back to the apples to mould them into different shapes as they begin to dry out.
  • Hanging bat

    What you need

  • Sheet of black card
  • Elastic string
  • Scissors
  • White pencil or chalk
  • Stapler
  • Instructions

  • Using the white pencil or chalk draw a silhouette of a bat.

  • Cut the bat out using the scissors

  • Staple the elastic string to the centre of the bat. And there you have your hanging bat.
