How Do I Implement Clutter Control Procedures?

OPH Good Housekeeping

We’ve all been in a position where we’ve needed a bit of clutter control in our lives. This is why I’ve decided to add a few hints and tips to help you out.

Clutter control has three important implications in the smooth running of our homes. Firstly, when the rooms of your house are less cluttered then you’ll find it much easier to keep those affected rooms tidier, not to mention make it easier to find things.

Secondly, a clutter free environment will make the rooms of your home look bigger and will enable you to move about more freely.

Finally, living in a clutter free home will lend itself to improving your emotional well being. It’s nice to come home from work to a clean and tidy space. Scientific tests have gone some way to proving that a tidy house reduces stress levels. Therefore for a less stressful life keep reading.

Tidy up after yourself
A good clutter control tip which is rarely followed as much as you make think is to tidy things away once you have finished using them. It’ll only take you five minutes or so but will save you hours of time in cleaning and tidying things away later on. Keeping on top of chores before they get out of control is always the best option.

If you have young children get them to put away there toys after they have used them (obviously, only if they are old enough to do so). Once they learn this it’ll almost become like a habit for them. Perhaps give them a weekly treat if they keep it up as an incentive.

If you have documents lying about file them to stop you from losing them or cluttering up the place, the same goes for things like clothing and cutlery.

Deal with junk mail
If junk mail is not dealt with straight away and is allowed to fester in draws, on tables or work surfaces then you’ll have a nightmare job on your hands in sorting them out from important documents in the future.

The chances are that if you allow junk mail to accumulate, then, there may well be a possibility that you’ll throw out important documentation when you come to dispose of it. People have been known to throw out passports, birth certificates and credit cards by accident as they’ve become hidden amongst the pile of junk.

So as soon as you get a piece of documentation you don’t think you’ll need in the future just throw it away. You should also think about doing a monthly sort out of your mail to keep on top of the clutter control.

What do I do if the clutter is so bad I don’t know where to start?
When this is the case, like any large task break the overall objective – which in this case is de-cluttering your home – down into smaller manageable ones. This can be done on room basis or in larger or very cluttered rooms by different areas such as the ‘sock drawer’ or the old cubbyhole. You can then plan which days you’ll do each task. Don’t panic you’ll get there.

Cut down on the amount of ornaments on display
Having too many ornaments scattered around your house could create an illusion of your home looking too busy and shabby. Try having as few as possible as this will create a more contemporary style for your home.

Adopting this style will give you the additional benefit of cutting down on the amount of dusting you’ll have to do, as less ornaments means less items which need to be cleared of dust.

Limit the buying of trinkets
Picking up goods from shops, auction sites, markets and car boot sales all the time without discarding any previously bought ornaments and the like will ensure your home being cluttered in no time at all. Before you decide to spend your hard earned cash decide whether or not you actually need the new item. My clutter control tip here is; if you don’t it don’t buy it. Spend your money on something you need.

Discard things you don’t use
If you fancy clearing out your home of rarely or unused items a good clutter control tip is to go around your home with a pen and piece of paper in hand and in an objective attitude go into each room, drawer or cupboard and right down the items which either you don’t use enough to justify keeping or items which you don’t like or can live without..

Once you have your list talk to other members of the household about the possibility of clearing out these unused items. If they agree, you can make some money. Get all the items which are still in good working order and sell them using established auction sites such as eBay or via a car boot or garage sale; after all, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.

Store things neat and tidily
A great clutter control tip is to make sure you put things such as clothes, games, toys and cutlery away neat and tidy. For example, when you put folded clothes into your drawers you’ll be surprised how much you can cram in to those very drawers, however on the other hand, if you just dump the clothes into the same drawers they will overflow and eventually break. Therefore neat and tidy is the order of the day.
