Christmas Tree History

OPH Good Housekeeping - Christmas Tree History

Decorating the home at Christmas time has been established for centuries. The first Christmas tree is credited to St Boniface (c722) ho stopped a pagan god from making a human sacrifice of a child, by uprooting an oak tree and felling the god. a fir tree sprang up in its place and was declared a holy tree. The faithful were instructed to carry such trees to their homes and surround them with gifts and love.

Christmas markets are basically a 17th century phenomenon. They not only sold trees but decorations as well. Originally it was thought these decorations were simply coloured red or white symbolising knowledge and innocence. It is now known that paper flowers and twisted candy sticks available were made in various colours. It was at this time that tinsel was born, made originally from strips of real silver.

Christmas trees were introduced to Britain during the reign of the Hanoverian kings (mid 18th to 19th Centuries) however they didn't become popular until the reign of Queen Victoria when they finally became part of the festive period. During the Victorian era trees were decorated with tinsel sliver wire ornaments, candles and beads. Gifts were hung from the tree as well as placed around the base.

The use of Christmas trees went into decline following the death of Queen Victoria but were resurrected in the 1930,s mainly due to the popularity of Dickensian tales. it was around that time the artificial tree was introduced which had become popular by the 1960,s bedecked with flashing lights that remain popular to this day.
