Christmas Party - Hints & tips

OPH Good Housekeeping

The Christmas party for many is the main event of the year, whether you are organizing a “works party” or private party, care is needed to make sure things go off with a bang rather than a whimper.

One of the main things which can put a dampener on your party is problems related to excessive drinking. As you know, traditionally people can get carried away with the whole Christmas feeling and this is when the problems can occur. Below are some excellent tips to ensure that the festivities stay under control, and that all your guests will thoroughly enjoy the proceedings.

Put up notices

Put up notices about the forthcoming party, perhaps around the venue. You could set guidelines either in a light hearted or serious context, outlining unacceptable forms of behavior. Hopefully this will make your guests think before taking part in any drunken horseplay.

Most of the information on these notices should show regard for general health and safety.

Conduct a risk assessment

A risk assessment should be conducted of the office, venue or home prior to the party. This will help you identify any potential hazards so your guests can be kept safe and clear from danger.

Assess any possible personality clashes

When drawing-up a seating plan make sure that any guests who may have had recent or long term fallouts with each other guests aren’t sitting on the same table as each other. Make sure they are sitting far apart. This will help avoid any potential for trouble.

Invite spouses

If you’re organizing a works party, a good idea could be to invite the spouses of colleague’s, as this will help reduce any possible sexual harassment conflicts.

Limit the alcohol

If you provide the alcohol for your party you could be libel for your drunken guests. So perhaps only have on offer lower alcohol drinks such as normal strength lager, cider and wine. A good idea could be to make fruit punch so you can control how much alcohol you put into it, plus you’re guests will not be able to tell the alcohol content of it.

Cover food

If you provide a buffet make sure that food is not left uncovered at room temperature for more than 90 minutes, especially cooked meats, and egg based dishes. As you could be getting complaints of food poisoning from your guests.

Let invitees make their own mind up

whether you are having an office or home party don’t put too much pressure on guests to attend as this can create resentment and potentially create a bad atmosphere at the party.

Putting up decorations

When are putting up decorations make sure you use step ladder rather than say a chair as this will add to the chances of you injuring yourself or others by falling.

Secondly make sure that if you are going to have candles don’t put them under ceiling decorations as they could fall down and cause a fire. Candles are fine for dinner tables, but if you are planning to place any anywhere else I would give it a second thought as they could be knocked over by guests.

Getting home

This Christmas party tip is very important. Make your guests aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, and try to stay aware of those guests who have been drinking and are planning to drive home. You could provide numbers of local taxi firms to help them get home.

The morning after

Don’t host your party if a number of your guests are expected to work the next day, as this could put a dampener on the festivities, try, where possible to hold parties during the holiday season or at the weekend.
