500g minced beef - £2.20
4 baking potatoes - £0.75
2 onions - £0.32
3 carrots - £0.26
Total cost - £3.53

Directions
The first thing you need to do for this cheap cottage pie recipe is pre-heat the oven to a temperature of 180 degrees C (360 degrees F).

Next, wash and peel the baking potatoes and cut them into quarters. Then boil them in lightly salted water until they become tender.

While the potatoes are cooking peel and chop the two onions and three carrots, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a frying pan and cook them until they become tender.

Next, add the mince and cook, ensuring that you keep stiring for the duration. When the mince has been cooked through season with salt and pepper and add 250ml of beef stock, made from 1 beef stock cube.

Now remove the potatoes from the heat, draine and mash them and then mix in 1 tablespoon of mustard and 100ml semi-skimmed milk.

When yo have done this place the mince in an oven proof dish, cover with the mashed potatoes and cook in the oven for roughly 20 minutes. Or until it is steaming hot all the way through and golden brown on top.

That's it, cottage pie for less than a fiver. Not bad eh?
