Anniversary Party Tips - How To Organise an Anniversary Party

OPH Good Housekeeping

"How do I organise an anniversary party?"

The wedding anniversary is a tradition which dates back hundreds of years, and the the job of organising it generally falls under the category of good houseekeeping. To help you out in the organising of such an event we have come up with some handy tips.

The wedding anniversary party is a big occasion and should be marked as such, especially the “big ones” such as your twentieth, thirtieth or fortieth.

They are a celebration of your love for each other, and the institution of marriage. Below are some tips to help you plan a party you will be proud of.

Food and drink

When organizing an anniversary party the food and drink is an essential part of it. Apart from the traditional buffet why not create a bit of nostalgia? You can do this by ordering champagne for the toast and even purchasing a replica of your wedding cake.

Create a traditional theme

You can organize your party to reflect the traditional present giving theme. For example if you are celebrating your fortieth anniversary, which is connected to the gem, Ruby, then perhaps this could be replicated in the décor.

Perhaps all the decorations can be red in colour, or, on the other hand the dress code perhaps could reflect the colour of the ruby. Below is a table of the traditional anniversary colours to help you out.

Anniversary Year Colour
First Papyrus Yellow
Second Linen White
Third Fawn
Fourth Green
Fifth Turquoise
Sixth White
Seventh Off White
Eighth Bronze
Ninth Terracotta
Tenth Silver
Eleventh Turquoise
Twelfth Oyster White
Thirteenth White
Fourteenth Ivory
Fifteenth Ruby Red
Sixteenth Silver
Seventeenth Yellow
Eighteenth Blue
Nineteenth Bronze
Twentieth White
Twenty-first Orange
Twenty-second Green
Twenty-third Silver
Twenty-fourth Lavender
Twenty-fifth Silver
Thirtieth Green
Thirty-fifth Coral
Fortieth Ruby Red
Forty-fifth Sapphire Red
Fiftieth Gold
Fifty-fifth Emerald Green
Sixtieth Diamond White
Sixtieth Sky Blue
Seventieth Platinum
Seventy-fifth Diamond White

Give plenty of notice

If you are booking a venue for your anniversary party, make sure you give the people running the venue, the caterers and the guests at least two months notice. This needs to be done as venues are usually booked in advance and the notice will allow your guests to keep a space free in their diaries.

Secondly sufficient time is needed to organize the event, the bigger the event the more notice you need to give the relevant people and the longer it will take to organize.

Check your dates

Before you go ahead and book a venue for your party make sure you check with important guests such as your closest family and friends that they are able to attend at the date you have chosen.

Secondly make sure that your chosen date does not conflict with other major events during the year, as this may take the spotlight off the happy couple.

Give out gifts

A nice touch is to hand out small gifts or "favours" to your guests for attending your party, like you did at your wedding. These gifts could reflect the traditional yearly anniversary themes. If you are celebrating your silver anniversary you could possibly give your guests a silver pen each, or silver jewelry, be creative, use your imagination. “In those days”

Why not have an anniversary party based on the decade or year you got married. If you were married in the Sixties you could have a party based on this decade, here you could even use sixties memorabilia for decorations, set a dress code on the decade, and make the DJ play music just from that era .

Do something wild

Why not organize an activity you wouldn’t normally do? This could be something which you have never gotten around to doing, but have always wanted to. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to go to, say, Las Vegas, you could organize a trip there for close family and friends and celebrate in style.
